I have fallen in love with New England coastal towns - Nantucket, Cape Cod… What’s better than sailing and swimming and long beach walks and bike rides and eating lobster rolls for every meal?! I had never been to Newport so Max and I decided to spend a few days there so we could enjoy a new adventure together and remind ourselves what fall feels like. (October is the month I am most homesick for the east coast because my house is decked out with halloween decorations and pumpkins and I *want* to wear a chunky sweater and bake cider donuts, but it’s 75° and sunny here in LA so I am trying to stay cool and keep my gourds in the shade…) So! We vacationed in Newport and I fell in love with New England all over again.
Adelephant’s Guide to Newport:
Hydrangea House is a romantic B&B in the heart of the “Old Quarter”. Located on Bellevue Avenue (the avenue of the Newport Mansions!), it’s a short walk to the mansions and to the harbor. And with complimentary wine and cheese and fresh baked chocolate cookies waiting for you nightly, what more could you want to come “home” to?
Forty1° North is a swanky boutique hotel right on the water. There’s something so magical about waking up to water views. This newly renovated hotel has all the amenities you’d expect and some you wouldn’t (HELLO life-size chess board!) and a lively bar scene.
The Lawn at Castle Hill - Stunning views. The most delicious lobster roll I had in Newport! Sunday brunch with live jazz is the perfect place for a fun celebration!
The Black Pearl makes the best cup of chowder in Newport. The Waterside Patio is at the center of the waterfront with views of the Newport Harbor.
White Horse Tavern first opened in 1673 and the cozy interior and decor transports you to the past. Perfect for a romantic dinner.
Cliff Walk is a 3.5 mile path along the eastern shore of newport - the path runs behind many of Newport’s famous gilded mansions and nonstop views of the water. Terrain is easy making it a fun activity for people of all ages.
Mansion Tours! Hands-down my favorite thing we did in Newport!! We visited many of the famous Gilded Newport Mansions: The Breakers, The Elms, Marble House, and Rose Cliff were our favorites! The Elms has a Servants Tour which will be a highlight for any Downton Abbey fans!!
Polo… Pack a picnic (and your favorite cocktails!) and head to the polo match held every Saturday June thru September. I can’t think of a more beautiful sport to watch and I jump on any opportunity to be the *Pretty Woman* in my own life.
Newport truly has something for everyone. Start your morning at the Coffee Grinder and take your time wandering around the colonial buildings in the historic district. (The Armory Antique Market should not be missed!) Newport has so many fun activities to entertain people of all ages, but the seaside city is perhaps best appreciated while relaxing...
